Zumba dance set Guinness World Record by Columbia
Palmetto Health and USC teamed up Saturday to dance their way into the Guiness Book of World Records.
Roughly 1,200 people showed up at the university’s Strom Thurmond Wellness Center to set the mark for ‘Zumba.’
Zumba is a workout which incorporates dance moves and musical styles such as salsa, merengue, mambo, belly dancing, and hip-hop. It was started by a Colombian dance instructor in the mid-1990s.
“So it’s something unique,” says Lisa Cassese with Palmetto Health. “We wanted to get a very large group together and that was kind of the inspiration to do it. It was to get as many people as possible for one common cause.”
The old record for Zumba was about 900, so Saturday’s total easily passed that. Participants got a roughly 30 minute exercise.
